At the end of World War II, when smoking had become very popular around the world, the movie industry had set its goal. Groucho Marx and Humphrey Bogart had paved the way for every major next generation movie star to become a walking commercial for tobacco products. Since movie stars had become the worlds role models, it would be very good for business if they could be pushed into on-screen smoking. There was only one problem. In 1932 already, the American Journal of Cancer associated lung cancer with smoking. And by 1945, many doctors and researchers firmly believed smoking was the cause of many deadly diseases. So was this a good time to bring even more people to smoking? Yes, it was. Because there was a lot of money to be made!

So Hollywood gave us new heroes such as John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman and Jack Nicholson. Superstars who were prepared to smoke a lot in their movies, despite many of them knowing this could lead to the public starting a deadly habit. And then of course came the 60's when everything apparently was ok. Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson are known to actually smoke marijuana on camera in the cult hit 'Easy Rider' (1969).

Actors being prepared to portray smoking as a non-harmful and pleasant thing to do, is bad enough in itself. But when actors are systematically paid to do this, it gets even worse. The tobacco industry is known for putting large amounts of money into Hollywood movies. In return, the actors portrayed smoking as if it were a cool and sexy habit. For example, Sylvester Stallone promoted tobacco throughout his career. Sources on the Internet claim he once accepted a $500,000 payment from a tobacco company to smoke their products in three films. The crowdpleasing James Bond franchise is infamous for its smoking scenes. In Superman II Lois Lane was chain-smoking the entire film, and showing the brand name of the cigarettes about 40 times in about 2 hours. The largest tobacco company in the world even placed its products in films like 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' and 'The Muppet Movie'. Films that you thought your children could watch without being motivated to smoke.

In the 90's, society was eventually fed up with the lies of the tobacco companies and smoking bans and smoking lawsuits emerged worldwide. So today, even the tobacco companies themselves have to admit that smoking causes deadly diseases for all of those within the range of a burning cigarette. So your children are safe now. Big Tobacco is beaten. They will never have the chance again to try and seduce your children to start the deadly habit? Wake up! Because Hollywood still is the no. 1 promotor of smoking today! And there is nothing they will not do to bring about the smoking message!

Just watch the heroic end of 'Independence Day' where superstars Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum save the world and then make a very cool looking stroll in the desert carrying some beaten alien scum with them. They have battled aliens for days, they are exhausted and have lost their family and friends. And then what do they do? They light a cigar for gods sake! There is no moment in the history of modern film where tobacco is promoted in such a shameless way.

More and more people quit smoking or want to stop smoking. This hardly reflects in Hollywood movies. Have a look at about any film with Colin Farrell. The guy just doesn't stop putting cigarettes in his mouth. It is the same with the extremely popular Brad Pitt. John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert de Niro, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, the list of movie stars promoting cigarette smoking goes on and on. Are we supposed to believe that the thousands of burning cigarettes we can see in big Hollywood productions every year are a complete coincidence or that they have been put in the script because this was needed for the development of the characters or to give the story a new dimension? Come on!

Even entire genres are infected. For example in slasher movies, targeted on teenagers, the youngsters very often are smoking pot wich usually is portrayed as cool. The few who refuse to smoke are usually nerds who at the end, decide to have a smoke anyway. A very wrong example is Jeepers Creepers 2 in wich a few female students are trying to hide their smoking habit from their teachers. In a next shot we see a teacher joining them smoking. That is supposed to be a funny moment in the movie!

Even the biggest crowd-pleasers in history 'Titanic' and 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' have smoking scenes in wich smoking is portrayed in a positive way. Note that Dominic Monaghan had to drink a glass of milk beforehand to keep himself from throwing up while smoking in The Return of the King. Christian Slater also became physically ill all the time during filming beacuse of the cigarette smoking he had to do. Is the movie-industry the only business in the world where they can force employees to smoke? In general, the movie industry is relatively perverted with smoking. We have payed some visits to casting agencies, production companies and indoor film sets. As modern as their equipment and products may look, a large portion of this industry is still living in the past by exposing their people to poisonous smoke!
